No icons or start button

Dell Dimension E510 - PC boots up fine: loads Windows and gets to password screen. When I enter my password, it says its loading my personal settings, goes into my wallpaper, and gets stuck with no icons and no start button displayed. Any suggestions?

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

My computer stays on bios and wont start

Restart your computer
During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup usually the Delete or F2 key
this will vary depending on your computer and operating system

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS using the arrow keys load failsafe defaults or load optimized defaults press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

hope this helps

I have an dell dimension e510 that boots to a black screen I have tried just about everything I can think of to fix it, I don't even see any way to boot to safe mode any ideas?

1) TAKE OUT YOUR LAPTOP BATTERY
• 2) REMOVE YOUR AC ADAPTOR CORD, that's the wall power, remove it.
• 3) NOW HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR 30 SECONDS.
That will drain any static electricity that has built up on your laptop system board and many times fixes the problem of a black screen. After the 30 seconds re-connect your laptop to the wall power and hit the power button normally and see if the laptop comes back up.
4- Replace your battery.
5-Restart

The recovery console can only be used if you have a recovery disk that was supplied or if you made one.

This is not a repair option that will just repair the PC.

The admin password is the password you set, windows does not set any passwords, so if you did not set a password then just hit enter, but as I said you need the recovery disk.

If you can not get into safe mode or the PC does not have a option to enter system restore, which could be F8, then there are a few things you can try.

You can try the last known good configuration,
you can try the repair boot.

.Boot with XP CD or 6 floppy boot disk set. 2. Press R to load the Recovery Console.
3. Type bootcfg.
4. This should fix any boot.ini errors causing setup not to see the XP OS
install.

Your best bet is if you have the windows disk,is to reinstall windows, but you need to go to the maker of the computer or you need to go to the motherboard and get all the drivers for your system.

What happened was, when windows installs updates it is writing to the system, and it warns you not to shut down, and this can take up two a few hours, it could have been updating a service pack. The system is stuck in writing and you will have better luck just reinstalling when using windows xp.
Vista is eaiser to repair then xp.

Dell - No icons or start button

to get your Icons back try this.
  1. Right-click the desktop.
  2. Point to Arrange Icons By.
  3. Click Show Desktop Icons.
I would also try this.
Another quick shot, is goto Start, Run, type "msconfig", and click the tab saying DIAGNOSTIC. click apply, restart, and see if your icons are there.

Then I would run a virus scan. you could have a virus on the machine. I recommend MalwareBytes for virus removal. you can get it at www.Download.com

Can't start Windows, Blue Screen gets in the way.

can you press the function key that takes Windows to diagnostic mode - usually F8. You have to press this key very quickly after you power on.

This might help you understand where it is failing.
Hopefully you have a recovery CD with which to boot and test the hard drive for corruption.
You will need to setup the BIOS bootup sequence to go to CD first.

Sounds like it could be a graphics card problem problem is it's integrated so part of your motherboard unless you have installed a graphics card.If you have a graphics card in it take it out plug your monitor into the other graphics port and enable on board graphics in your BIOS/ integrated peripherals by pressing F12 key,..if it now works you know your graphics card is broke. If you havn't a graphics cardin it your motherboard needs replacing.
