I believe the problem is that your PowerBook does not have the proper drivers for this projector. The maximum resolution on it should be 1600 x 1200, however Dell only certifies this with (and provides drivers for) Windows XP and Vista. I have been unable to find Macintosh drivers for it, and think it unlikely they exist.
Without the exact drivers, your computer will find the best match. That usually means you cannot use advanced features, such as higher resolutions, with the projector.
Sorry I don't have better news for you. If you perhaps copied your presentation over to a Windows laptop and connected it, it might work. I'm honestly rather disappointed in Dell for not providing Mac drivers for this.
HI.... ........YO U NEED A ADAPTER WHICH IS CALLED MINI-DIV TO VGA ADAPTER....THIS ADAPTER WILL HAVE TWO PORTS ONE PORT IS CALLED MINI-DIV PORT ANOTHER PORT IS CALLED VGA FEMALE PORT (WIDER THAN DIV PORT)..NOW PLUG THIS DIV PORT TO YOUR MACBOOK AND THE OTHER ONE IN YOUR PROJECTOR ...YOU MAY ALSO NEED A VGA CABLE..
sound form your projector? or from your speakers? set the volume of your projector to maximum. then check your connection cables if good your speakers if working. check all your component have pwoer supply.
you cannot pass a signal through a usb input. USB inputs on a computer are usually used from firmware upgrades or mouse control depending on projector.
my advise is to get a new one or try ebay - i got my dell 3300mp NEW in box for under $400 - and have looked at other projectors there are very good deals on ebay but make sure you read the entire listing
