Thats cause you are running the wing 98 of the same hard drive that you are trying to format. What you need to do is create a boot disc. boot from that disc and then format.

you can also boot from a win 98 cd to format as well.. If you have problems doing that let me know and i can walk you through it :)

Want to format hard drive

to format hard drive you either have a utility disk that will let you log into DOS and then run Format command. Or, if you have an operating disk like Windows(?), where you insert it and when it tries to install it will ask you to format hard drive? you allow this to run until it has reformatted hard drive. THis will put your version of Windows on the pc hard drive and have wiped whatever else was on the drive before.
if you just want a wipe of drive take it out of PC chasis and run a magnet all over it. or put it in another pc drive bay and run dos Format command on that drive letter (E:) or whatever letter is assigned to it.
more info about what or why you want to do something helps us to give you the best answer(solution) to your questions.

What is ms dos command prompt

MS-DOS stands for Microsoft Disk Operating system. Its has CUI(Character User Interface) unlike Widows which has GUI(Graphical User Interface)
Which means you need to type commands in MSDOS. In windows we see icons, folder etc to work using mouse but MSDos is different.
To open MSDOS
Click Start goto Run - Type CMD and press Enter (for Windows XP) Click Start - Type CMD in search - Click on CMD (For Windows Vista and 7)

Hello,

MS Dos was the first operating system released by Microsoft. It was purely a command line operating system with no GUI much like dot matrix and the linux terminal.

Turbo c not working....16 bit ms-dos subsystem error

There have been several changes in the way programs work. Windows xp does not
allow direct access to hardware resources to protect system integrity.
However you can try a few things

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314106
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=165214
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=324767

Generaly speaking this error shows up when a program tries to use a
command.com file from an incompatible version of windows.

Alternatively login in safemode and use. it ll work fine. rate this!!

I`m unable to install windows 98 in seagate 80 gb ide barracuda hdd

For W98, if you create the bootdisk from within windows, you will need to go here to download the newest version of FDISK.EXE then copy it to the bootdisk, allowing it to overwrite the older version. This way you will have support for larger harddrives.

FDISK LIMITATION WITH 64GB DRIVES:
Why does FDISK not recognize my disk (or RAID array) which is larger than 64GB?

There is a bug in Microsoft's FDISK under Windows 95B, 98 and 98SE that can be corrected by downloading a newer version. See Knowledge Base Article Q263044 for more information.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q263044

When you use Fdisk.exe to partition a hard disk that is larger than 64 GB (64 gigabytes, or 68,719,476,736 bytes) in size, Fdisk does not report the correct size of the hard disk.

The size that Fdisk reports is the full size of the hard disk minus 64 GB. For example, if the physical drive is 70.3 GB (75,484,122,112 bytes) in size, Fdisk reports the drive as being 6.3 GB (6,764,579,840 bytes) in size.

NOTE: This hotfix is not designed for 48-bit logical block addressing (LBA) hard disks, and it is not supported on hard disks larger than 137 GB. However, even if the drive is physically larger than 137 GB, if you create partitions smaller than 137 GB, this FDISK.EXE version will work correctly. (THE FORMAT COMMAND WILL SHOW THE DRIVE AMOUNT IN DOS TO BE OFF THE MARK, BUT WILL BE CORRECT WHEN YOU GET INTO WINDOWS ITSELF)

Direct English Version download:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/Win98/Update/8266R/W98/EN-US/263044USA8.EXE

This package installs the updated Fdisk.exe to the Windows\Command and Windows\Options\Cabs folders, on a computer running Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition. If you are starting a computer from a Windows 98 Startup Disk in order to partition and format the hard disk, you should copy the updated Fdisk.exe from the Windows\Command folder to the Startup Disk, replacing the original Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition version of Fdisk.exe on the Startup Disk.

PLEASE NOTE: Re-formatting the MP3 Player will result in a loss of all original files!

I can personally say that the comment posted by 'babayigit-em' works perfectly. The procedure I followed was:

1) START > Run > (In this section enter the command: CMD)
2) In this black MS-DOS box enter the following command: FORMAT F: then press ENTER (Note:' F:' was the name of the drive my MP3 took, this will be different for many people so enter the one in 'My Computer' which your 'removable disc' MP3 takes up)
3) The command will produce a set of information i.e. your MP3 has so many bites and free bites etc., it may ask you to press ENTER again at a later stage it did for me click ENTER where it says and the message 'Format completed' should appear on the screen
4) Remove the MP3 drive from the PC, switch it on (It will say NO MP3 FILE) then re-insert it and hey presto it should work normally again but unfortunately the original files will have been lost.

Format a corrupt system without 98 bootable

Hi,

Basically yes. You need to remove the HD from the PC without any bootable devices and install it as a slave to a second PC preferably also Win98.
You can then proceed to format the HD (as FAT32) of the 1st PC on the 2nd PC. Sys that HD to transfer system files and make it active. To facilitate installation of the OS, create a folder on that HD and copy the Win98SE installer files into it. Remove that HD from the 2nd PC and reinstall on the 1st PC. Power and it will boot into Dos.  Go inside the folder where the OS installers are and run "setup".

Alternately, you can just clone the HD of the 2nd PC to the corrupt HD of the 1st PC after format  /s. Just make sure that you still have the Win98SE installers copied to the corrupt HD.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things went or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

The last version of (Microsoft) stand-alone MsDOS was 6.22. The DOS that comes with Windows 98 is MsDOS 7.xx. There are of course, other DOS's, like DrDOS, FreeDOS, etc. etc. What is it you actually need to do?
