-   O.k. so my question is that I have a regular phone line for the internet port on my Linksys that I took from my 2wire 2700HG-D. Then I have my ethernet cable to connect my laptop while using my laptop wifi. How do I commence installation of the Lynksys?

-   I have been using a Linksys router wrt54 successfully for a couple of years between the cable modem and computer. For no apparent reason it stopped working and I can't connect to the internet using the router. I tried the reset method. Didn't work. Can't find my original installation disk. The company gave me another set of directions which required me to open the browser and type in an IP address in the address bar. The browser portal is the cable company homepage and the IP address is not accepted. What's best way to get the router working again? Unplug everything and try reset again?-   tolkien
Which part of the installation are you stumped by? Do you have cable or DSL internet?
Basically, you need to connect the ethernet cable (looks like a phone line cable just bigger) from the modem to the WAN or Internet port on the router. Then, you need to connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports (usually they're numbered, you can connect it to #1) to your computer. You then should be able to go online if you're using cable internet and if you're using DSL, you should be able to dial up. You can then login to the router by going to http://192.168.1.1 in your web browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) and setup your wireless network with a password, and, if your internet is DSL then you can setup the PPPoE settings so your router "dials up" rather than your computer (this is better than having to dialup from one computer and then share the connection with the other ones on the network).
linksys is set at 192.168.1.1 with a blank user name and password is admin. if it also is opening your modem page, then disconnect the input from the modem where it plugs into the router, then log into the router. you can also hit start, run, command, then type ipconfig /all and it should show an ip of something like 192.168.1.102 which means typing 192.168.1.1 should log you into the router. so if it gives you 192.168.2.112 try 192.168.2.1. most dial up networks require setting up a ppoe connection so if you did a hard reset it will be in auto dhcp mode and will not work. so get in the router and then call your isp and ask them for the settings.
