Hello,
The basics of scientific notations are as follows.
Every quantity is represented by
  1. A mantissa multiplied by
  2. a power of 10
The mantissa is a number that has
  • 1 digit (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9) followed by
  • the decimal mark ( dot or comma) and by
  • several decimal digits (depending on the configuration of your calculator
The power of 10 is made up of
  • the E symbol, followed by
  • a small minus sign or no sigh if exponent is positive
  • an exponent with 1 or 2 digits
Ex:
1 is displayed as 1E0 meaning 1*10^0
10 is displaye as 1E1meanibg 1*10^1
100 is displaye as 1E2 1*10^2

0.5 is displaye as 5E-1 (the 5 is in first position after the decimal mark)
0.07 is displaye as 7E-2 ( the 7 is in 2nd position after the decimal mark)
0.004 is displayed as 4E-3 the 4 is in first position after the decimal mark)

333.25 is displayed as 3.3325 E2

To enter number in scientific notation
On you calculator you should not use the [^] key to enter powers of 10, you use a short cut key [2nd] [EE]
If you have done some chemistry, you might have seen
  1. Avogadro's Number Na =6.02 * 10^23
  2. You type 6.02 [2nd][EE]23
  3. you see 6.02 E23
The electon charge 1.6*10^(-19)
  1. You type 1.6[2nd][EE] [(-)] 19; the [(-)] id the change sign (under the [3] key)
  2. You see 1.6E-19
You can verify that the two numbers I used as exemples have
  • a single digit before the
  • decimal mark,
  • one or more digits after the decimal mark,
  • the power of 10 (*10^ or E on calculator),
  • a minus sign or no sign
  • up to 2 digits in the exponent.
Hope it helps.
