Based on your situation. I suggest trying the following steps:
1. You can download the sound driver from your computer's manufacturer web site.
2. Select the model of your computer/laptop,
3. Make sure you select the Windows XP or Vista version of the drivers that matches your Windows operating system.
4. After downloading install the sound driver then restart your computer.
--> if you cant find the website. Just provide me the brand of your computer and the operating system.
Hope it helps.

Once we re-format the computer, we need to load the drivers for video, audio and other attached peripherals that support different functions in computer. Provided the link that must be compatible and work for you. http://www.tipsdr.com/windows-xp-drivers.html & http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html
There may be other problems with your sound. however to install a sound device download Driver-Mechanic free from www.elitegroup.com driver updates and run it on your computer, it will automatically detect any required driver updates for your PC and update them as required from the website free. Alternatively go to your control panel, open system icon, click hardware tab, click device manager, go to sound video & game controllers & double click to open, select your multimedia controller and right click, click "properties", click the "Driver" tab & click the "update driver" button; windows will then guide through the process to update your driver.
