It sounds like you might have a shorted diode or two on the rectifier. The stud mount diodes can be replaced while the ones that are pressed into the aluminum plate can not.
To check the stud mount diodes they need to be isolated from the heatsink. Unscrew the nut that holds it to the heatsink. Using a digital volt ohm meter set to the diode test position, place one lead on the threaded stud and the other on the soldered wire. Note your reading and swap the position of your test leads. A good diode will show O.L. one way and have a diode drop of .2-.9 volts the other way. Shorted diodes will have a reading of something like .001 volts.
