I have a 42" Samsung and am getting a black and white picture without sound when I try to connect the wii. There is audio left and right (red and white) but no yellow outlet.

Try connecting the yellow into the white. If you do not have a yellow input then it might not be a TV that accepts video for consoles. Unfortunately these still are being manufactured. You could connect some sort of other device to the RF of the tv like a VCR or Satellite and use that for your video input. (If possible)
