Hi Wilma,
Go to http://my.garmin.com
Register for a free account.
If you have not registered your unit it will ask for the serial number and ask you to choose the model.
If you are eligible for free updates it will tell you, otherwise you can purchase the updated maps per the cost at the website.
Of course you must have a pc cable to connect to your device - unless possibly you can update via bluetooth.

Just in case you don't have a garmin pc cable try using a pc cable that fits a motorola razor. I have used that cable to connect without problems from my garmin to pc.
