I don't know if this applies to the Sansa for sure or not but many MP3 devices and smartphones if completely dischard will not charge back up via usb to computer, you have to use a wall jack charger. This is true for the Motorola Q and other smart phones I know for a fact, also the Apple Ipod Gen 5 has had some issues with charging after complete discharge of the battery. Try a wall charger if possible. I don't know much about the sansas.

Connect the iPod shuffle USB cable connector into a high-power USB port on your computer.
Note: To charge an iPod shuffle battery, connect the device to a high-power USB port.
Please be aware that USB keyboards and non-powered USB hubs generally do not have high-power USB ports.
If you connect to a low or non-powered port, iPod shuffle will not charge.
The computer must be turned on and set to not go to sleep.
Plug the other end of the iPod shuffle USB Cable into the headphone port on the iPod shuffle.
Verify the iPod shuffle is connected securely.
Once the iPod shuffle is plugged in, it will take about 2 hours to charge the battery to 80% capacity and about 3 hours to charge it to 100%.

Make sure that the USB cable is properly plugged in and use the original cable that came with your player.
Computer in Hibernation mode
Make sure the computer isn't entering hibernation or sleep mode while the device is connected. The computer must be ON in order to charge your player.
USB Port 2.0
Make sure the player is connected to a USB 2.0 port (1.1 occasionally causes charging problems).
USB Port location
Try plugging into different USB ports (i.e. USB port in the back of the computer); occasionally the front USB ports have limited power to charge up the device.
Make sure the battery is fully charged. It takes approximately 3 hours to fully charge the battery.
Depending on what Sansa player you have, make sure it's up to date with the latest Firmware.
AC charger (optional)
AC chargers (sold separately) have a 500-1000 milliamp max output, which provides much better charging ability than a USB port. These accessories are available at SanDisk web site.
