IPhone problems with new sim card

OK I got a new iPhone (2G i think) as a present, but it didn't come with a sim card. So I bought a new O2 one and started using that with it.
The actual sim works fine, but the number in the phonebook section shows up as a completely different number to the one that is registered to the sim card.
Also, when I select an Application to use, it flashes then goes back to the Springboard. Help please? Thanks in advance
