Re: Canon Camera - Memory Card error & Card locked error

Try reading the card independent of a camera i.e. on a computer or a photo kiosk to determine if the card is readable damaged

Canon elph 300hs error code e02

Canon has reserved the 02 error for memory card error. But your camera should tell the errors in plain text. If you did not switch the memory card to the Lock, there is a possibility the file system is corrupted.
Try to save all pictures you still can find on the card. Use an external card reader.
If no important pictures are on the card, you could give it a format. Please always format a new card in the camera, before you start shooting. Even when formatted in an other camera from the same brand, could cause problems. If after a format, the error is still coming back, try an other memory card.

I have error code #99 on a canon eos 30d

Error 99 is Canon's default for several "connection" problems most common are dirty contacts between the lens and camera body. Another is the contacts in the battery compartment both the camera and the battery contacts should be cleaned.

The camera might not be able to read the memory card, download the pictures to your computer and format the memory card don't delete them format the card this function is found in the set up menu.

Formatting is one of the most important functions to keep the camera and memory card communicating AND is the most neglected function. Always format a new memory card and always format a memory card after downloading pictures to a computer. Format a memory card if it's been in another camera.

Cleaning the lens and body contacts can be done fairly easily with a clean pencil eraser, don't use a puffer on the body as you will blow dirt into the camera. With the lens removed hold the camera as much as possible with the lens opening pointed down and gently polish the gold contacts. Do the same with the lens contacts make sure both areas are clean and re install the lens to the body.

Possibly the most important "fix" is to update your camera's firmware. Go to Canon's web site (it can be a bit intimidating at first) and search through until you find the firmware updates for your camera. Download this generally they want you to download to a memory card then place the card into the camera and upload the new firmware updates.

The Canon 30D (in my opinion) is one of the best no frills, greatest working DSLR cameras Canon produced. Not saying the model's beyond are not it's just the 30D isn't loaded down with video functions. Great all around working camera, sorry my rant for the day.

Cheers have fun with your Canon 30D

Hi I have a Canon Ixus 200 IS. When I first used it I downloaded photos no problem onto both my laptop and home desktop. Now though I am getting an error - do not recognise USB device - or something...

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

As for the locked card, look at the memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Merory card error

That usually means that you need to format the card in the camera. This will erase the card so download any pics first using a card reader if necessary.

Memory card locked

this is from whew a lot of people get this error... hope all of u resolves this..

but before u truobleshoot for recovery of pictures, check first the slide on your memory card (card protection) slide it both ways and check it... someone advices from a thread to use paper clips to pick the slot of the cam where u put the card, it work for him but i think its not a good idea coz it may damage the slot.. okay.. if there is still an error u can bring it to a tech person (canon support service) or just try to recover ur files...

Memory card is used by digital camera to store the photos it takes. Popular memory cards include SD card, CF card, xD-Picture card and Memory stick. For some reasons, memory card may get damaged on power shortage, or removal of memory card on picture shooting or viewing, or other various and unknown reasons. Usually, you will see error message like "memory card error", "card locked", "card error", or an error code on your camera screen and the valuable pictures on the memory card could disappear and be lost. Some cases, your camera or Windows may prompt you to re-format the memory card and refuse to take new pictures or view old pictures.

Once you have your memory card damaged, it is highly recommended to stop further operations on the memory card (e.g. taking new pictures, or delete, format the memory card). Data recovery software like "CardRecovery" is able to recover the lost pictures in most cases.

First, you need to confirm your memory card can appear as a drive letter in "My Computer", which will allow recovery software to access and recover the lost photos. You may try to connect your digital camera to your computer, if a new drive letter appears in "My Computer", it is OK. Otherwise, you need to prepare a USB card reader. There are many card readers available in market (e.g. SanDisk and Kingston). You can buy one from Amazon or BestBuy.

Then, you may download and install CardRecovery to your computer. Launch it from Start Menu -> Programs -> CardRecovery. You select the drive letter of your memory card, and destination folder for save the recovered files. CardRecovery will scan your memory card and locate the recoverable pictures. The process is quick and easy. Usually it takes less than 15 minutes.

Can I re-use the corrupted memory card?

For data protection, CardRecovery performs read only operation on your memory card and it does not change the data on the memory card, so it does not repair or fix the memory card. If you need, AFTER you have recovered your lost photos from the card, you may try to format the memory card before re-use. It is suggested to perform enough read/write test before using it again to take new pictures. If you are worrying that the memory card is unstable and may cause further data loss, purchase and use a new memory card. Your valuable and irreplaceable photos are more important than memory card. Memory card is very cheap. A new 2GB SD, CF or xD card is less than $10.

This question comes up several times a day here in the camera section at Fixya. Please don't take the following as a sales pitch as it's not, but please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of an inexpensive card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue:

Remove the memory card from the camera. Note that there is a small slide switch on one of the long edges of the card. Slide the switch to unlock or lock the card.

Canon camera deleted pictures

I have had success with this camera photo recovery software... Download the picture recovery program from

You have to use a card reader either on your computer or an external USB card reader. Put the card in the card reader, open the recovery program, then select the drive where files are deleted, then press "Start" and wait for it to do it's magic.
