Turn off the pc but leave the monitor on. unhook the monitor from the pc. the screen SHOULD run a "self test" with a moving white green red blue box. if that box is on a bare black screen and there are no bright spots or cracks or anything weird looking, then the screen itself is ok. If however, you see odd shades of blue and pink and it looks cracked or scratched or has lines in it, then it is time to replace that screen.

The Dell Dimension XPS 8300 system is automatically disabling the nVidia GeForce FX 5200 driver (Dell-installed) and defaulting to a generic VGA configuration. As a result, the images on screen appear elongated (vertically) and shortened (horizontally). Everything appears too tall and skinny. I have tried multiple reinstalls, deleted the driver, rolled it back, etc. When last I tried to uninstall the driver I got a message indicating that cant be uninstalled because the driver is needed for the system to boot. How do I fix this? Your assistance is appreciated. .
