hello i found a ibm thinkpad t41 in my moms basement after she die, i can prove her purchas, anyway i tried to turn it on but there is a poweron password and ibm coast way to much for me. i want to know if there is a disk or somthing that i can use to clear everything and start over is there somthing i can do. i hate to throw a perfectly goos laptop away.
The ibm BIOS password can probably be reset by removing the CMOS (RTC) battery for 15 minutes and reseating the battery. Remove the RTC battery, remove the main battery from the laptop. After the time has expired replace the RTC battery but leave the main battery out. Plug in the ac adapter and power on the laptop. The password text box may still appear, just hit the enter button and see if the laptop takes it and boots. If it does, you will have to reboot the computer and when you see the IBM splash screen, hit the F2 key and get into setup or BIOS screen and reset the date and time or some programs will not work correctly. If this method does not work, write back to us, and we will try another method. Below is the factory service manual, it is free to copy and print as a reference. Use it to find and remove the cmos battery.
