Try going to Device Manager:
- Click on the Start button
- Look for Computer, or My Computer, and right-click on it
- In the menu that pops up, choose Manage
- A window named Computer Management comes up
- On the left pane, look for Device Manager and click on it
- The right pane will show you the Devices on your system. The sound drivers go under the "Sound, video & game controllers" section
Under this section, look for any devices that have a yellow or red sign on them. This would indicate a problem with that device. It would most likely be caused by a driver problem. Either a wrong driver, or a corrupt install. Be sure you have the right driver and try installing again.
If you don't see any devices there with yellow or red symbols, it could indicate a hardware problem, e.g. loose internal speaker cable.
Let me know what you find.
