This is what my Sony VAIO says: ''A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop Error Screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or back-up utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
What money are you talking about? I take it it does this reliably on power-on? It's just a hard drive error of some sort; boot the utility CD featured with a new boxed hard drive and use it to copy the old drive to the new, then try to boot the new disk; if it does the same thing you've still made progress; you can boot to the utility CD (e.g. Mint Linux) again and perhaps find a utility to restore the boot sectors; or run CHKDSK /F on the old drive using the Windows disk that Sony packed with the unit when it was new...now that you have the backup. At any rate, you can recover the data now even if you have to install Windows and explain that you changed physical HDs.

The battery indicator in the task bar of my desktop has entirely disappeared. I've attempted to restore it by going into the control panel and ticking the "always show" box but it doesn't work. Is there any way to solve this problem or will i always have to refer to the control panel to know the battery level?
I use the home edition of Windows XP. Is this a typical issue with XP users?
Thanks in advance
