To fax do you send paper through it or scan it to

Assuming you have it hooked up to a phone line that is capable of dialing the number you want to fax to, you put your paper in the top tray, dial the number and hit send. The machine will pull through the paper and deposit it under that top tray. You will want to make a copy first so you know you are putting in the paper facing the right direction (it should be face up.) Put a single sheet face up in the top tray and hit copy. If what comes out of the bottom-most tray underneath is an exact copy of your original, then you're fine, if it's blank, then flip the orginal over and try again.
