Question about Western Digital My Book Pro Edition II WDG2TP10000 1 TB FireWire 400 (1394a) Hard Drive
Hi I have a new IMac and just bought a new MY Book Pro. First i connected it to the I-Mac using firewire without a problem. 2nd time the device did not show up any longer. I have no problem connecting through USB. If i take the harddrive and connected to my MacBook using firewire i don't have a problem. If i take any other device and connect it to IMac using firewire don't have a problem either. Please help me figure this out.
Don't connect the USB and firewire at the same time, use one or the other. In general for USB, for the very first connection, it is better to have the computer fully booted, and the MyBook spun up, before connecting the USB cable. After that, you can boot the computer with or without the MyBook connected or turned on. For the firewire connection, check your manual for the correct order of connection and power on.
USB and firewire 400 are roughly comparable. USB is theoretically a little faster, but you will see little difference. There are other factors that can affect your actual performance, so your best answer is to try a test yourself. Time a copy of a very large file, and a copy of a folder with a very large number of files.

I picked up a couple of My Books lately( via Ebay), and noticed that i can not get them to work on the Firewire interface with my Dual Core Intel Mac. Shows up on USB2.0 fine however.I found an online reference that said Apple changed some things on the Firewire interface year or two ago, and that vendors had to update their firmware (it related to Firewire devices reporting a unique ID to the Mac).

Does it make any clicking/clunking sounds like any of these: http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php?
If yes - it's really bad.
If not - then try to remove it from enclosure and connect directly to a PC.

You will need to have a third party software to achieve this. I recommend norton partition magic. I have been using it in the same scenario as yours and works. they now support firewire. Easy to use and gets the job done.
Hope that helps.
