Question about Hitachi 50V500 50 in. HD-Ready LCD Television
You have a defective light engine and Hitachi is aware of it. This just recently happened to us and here's what you need to do. Call Hitachi's customer RELATIONS department (not customer service) at 800-654-7013 and tell them what your set it doing and that you have a bad light engine. They will initially act like they've never heard of this problem...but they have! They will however, give you the names of some certified dealers in your area. Once you have a tech come and to diagnois the problem (takes about 5 seconds once you turn the TV on) call Hitachi back at the # I listed above. Hitachi will all of sudden tell you that they will call the dealer and confirm that it's a bad light engine. Once they confirm this is the problem, they will send a brand new light engine to the dealer and the dealer should then call you and come to your home to install it.
Here's the kicker, regardless if your still under warranty or not, Hitachi is covering the cost of this part (part around $1500) however, if you're not under warranty, you will have to pay the install. Our install was $400...worth it to us on a $3600 TV that we've only had 3 years and we've loved. If you're still under warrnanty, Hitachi will cover the part and the install.
Please DO NOT let any certified dealer or store tell you that you will have to pay for this part. Hitachi is replacing it for free. They have not recalled this part but they are replacing it. You just pay the install if not under warranty.
One other thing, PLEASE deal only with Hitachis customer relations department at the # I listed above and not their regular customer service. Their regular customer service will not be able to help you and will have you very frustrated. Once our light engine was replaced, the TV is like brand new. Good Luck:)

Uh Oh! blue screen of death. Your light engine
has warped a little from overheating and is distorting the picture.
My suggestion to you is to get on the phone with hitachi and start
complaining, then keep complaining until they agree to pay for it. You
may have to get the problem diagnosed by a pro before they agree to pay
for it though.
Hope ya fix it!

i have a fuzzy line from the middle top of set to the lower left.
We have the same problem with our TV, The repair man came out today to verify it was the light engine. Hitachi will send the part to our repair man but we have to pay the labor. Has anyone had any luck with Hitachi paying for any if not all the labor. It is going to cost us about $490.00 after all is said and done to get this repaired. The TV is 2 years old. If they know it's defective, why are we responsible for the labor. When you spend this much for a TV you don't expect these kinds of problems
I have the same problem.Does anyone live in the tristate area that can talk to hitachi for me to verify that it is in fact the engine light.
We have had the identical blue screen of death problem..the blue blob eventually grows, turns red....back to blue and engulfs the entire screen. We, of course, are out of our warranty, and ended up purchasing a new TV (NOT A HITACHI !!) Based on the information found on this site, we will contact Hitachi at the number provided, pursue the "fix", and see if we get any resolution.
Thank you for the help!
