I try to plug my creative zen into the usb socket to load music on but when i plug the lead in,i get a double bell sound from my pc

The bell sound means that a new device has been detected on the USB OR that a device has been unplugged.

That sound is Windows letting you know the computer is recognizing that you just inserted a USB device. If you'll watch in the lower right corner, typically a note will pop up saying that Windows is installing the device.
If you wait a moment or two, go to Start > Computer and ou should see your zen listed as Device with Removable Storage.
