Whirlpool dishwasher model DU1145XTP7 Clean LED is blinking, manual says check heater circuit. Any thoughts are appreciated

Heater element shorted, a resistor on the control board is visibly fried which makes it inoperable. Estimate to replace both is at least $300. This is terrible design, should be a protection fuse on the control panel. Chances are this will happen again after the repair, design has not been modified. We invested our money in a replacement w/a one year warranty. Rather than 90 days for parts and service.
