Can't download sony dsc-s980 to my mac

can't download sony dsc-s980 to my mac. I loaded the software and attached the cord to the mac. Have had camera for a month, attached it to my mac and the mac doesn't know the camera is there. How to fix?

Use a card reader to download to a folder you create on your desktop.
