The drive operates on a 12V, 1.5Amp power supply but the manual doesn't specify polarity(not uncommon). If the power supply has failed you should be able to find polarity indicators on it, if it is lost, it would cost about the same to simply purchase a new enclosure and transfer your drive into that rather than risk getting it wrong.
Given it's advanced age(a senior citizen in the technological world) the drive inside is undoubtedly IDE(or ATA but not SATA), ensure the enclosure you purchase to move the drive into supports IDE/ATA as most these days only support SATA given it's dominance over the past decade. Also given it has passed the point of expecting data loss(computer Alzheimer's), I would highly recommend purchasing a replacement at the same time and copying all of the relevant data to the newer drive as a precaution before retiring the old drive.
Almost every computer manufacturer has their own way of installing hard drives on each system they make. You should look up your specific Gateway system at their website and look for service and support. There should be instructions posted. Given that Gateway is failing or has failed as a company there may not be any resources available. If that is the case you should take the computer to a computer service center for assistance.

Try shutting down the PC, when it's off plug in the 1000gb external HD,
Restart the Computer, If Windows still dosen't recognize it, then it's most likely defective, and should be returned. Try purchasing a higher quality brand.
If you can find someone with good soldering skills you may be able to get the socket replaced. but it's a bit of a gamble. Some sockets are extremely difficult to get at and some are easy - and you know which way luck goes!
The drive inside, is however most likely unaffected by all this. If you can get the enclosure open (you'll have to google for instructions for your particular model as not all WD externals are the same) you can remove the drive and fit it into an empty enclose that you can buy at most decent computer suppliers. Then just plug it in and use as before.
If the drive is new and you do not see it as a drive in my computer in may need to be initilized and/or partitioned. Click Start, then Right click on My Computer and click Manage, then click Disk Management. See if your external drive shows up in the list. If it does, right click in the box on the left to see your options. if it needs to be initialized choose it in the list. Then right click on the larger box on the right and choose Partition as the option and follow the instructions given.

Because the reformat or restore process erases everything on your computer, it is critical to have a backup of any important files on your computer. You will also need your original software install disks to reinstall any software you have purchased.
Write down or print out all notes and internet pages because once the format process begins, you will no longer have access to them (or anything else in the PC)
As already stated, BACKUP all important files and data! When you reformat your computer everything will be erased!
Make sure you have all the CDs and other software. All programs will have to be reinstalled after you format the hard drive. Don't forget about software that came with hardware such as printers, scanners, etc.
Write down the brand and information for all the hardware on your computer. Look in the Device Manager and make note of the brand and model of network adaptors, video cards, sound cards, printers, modems, and displays.
