Question about JVC AV-56WP30 56" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Blue horizontal line

I have developed a bowing blue horizontal line across the top of the picture. It is present all of the time and seems to be throwing the other colors off around it. Any help or info would be appreciated.

Re: blue horizontal line

Hi Brian,
Sounds as though you have a bad convergence chip ( there are two convergence chips on the board ). I suggest you change both and apply lots of heat silacon grease. Good Luck

On my HD1080 Mitsubishi projection flat screen 55809 the picture is bowed on top and bottem and it look as if the projectors themselves are offset, but the picture is clearer as you come toward the center....

It could be one of two things: Either a bad solder joint or convergence IC failure.

Convergence IC failure is very common. The solution is to replace the STK chips, check fuses and the resistors next to the STK chips. Replace as necessary and re-align via the service menu. It is about a $300 repair at a tv service center. You will need the service manual if you decide to do this yourself.

Try This:
When you notice the symptons Use this simple test to verify.
Go to the users menu on the tv.
Look for the converge option probably under setup or video setting. Converge is short for convergence to align the red and blue colors to the green color.

If you cannot move the red either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for red section.
If you cannot move the blue either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for the blue section.

If you can move both in each direction then the problem is something else.

Note if one STK chip fails, you replace both regardless

Rca model d52w23 picture bowed, a red, blue, agreen line running across the top picture looks 3d mainly in red, blue, green

It is possible that the CRT is shorting to the convergence Yoke, pretty likely actually considering the new one lasted 15 minutes.
To fix this you must use RTV or silicone and put it all around the suction cups that are on the CRT, this is usually where the voltage develops a leak and can short out various components.
Silicone or RTV those up, then replace the fuse and see if it fires up.
If it fires up and the picture is bowed again (convergence) then you will have to replace the board again :(
The other possibility (very unlikely) is that the CRT centering is so farr off that the convergence chips have to do extra hard work to align it, this usually only happens after a CRT replacement or Yoke replacement.
Let me know, if needed further assistance.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Distorted Picture and High Pitch Squeal

You may have a convergence problem. Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos.

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick email and they will put one together for you. Their kits includes photo instruction guides, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Sudden discoloration, ghosting, bowed horizontal lines in top and bottom of picture

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture
