Question about Magic Chef CMV1000B Microwave Oven

Magic Chef MCO153UW

My OTC microwave shuts down after heating food/liquid after a period of time. Unit turns back on after a time cooling. I know the internal Magnatron fan is not working/running, so I belive the Magnatron may be overheating - not sure.

If it is the fan, should I consider having a technician repair the unit, or should I just by a new unit (past warrenty)?
Should I attempt to replace the mag. fan myself?

Microwave shuts down, especially when popping popcorn.

  • dufresnk Apr 08, 2008

I didn't even have to run the microwave this past weekend. The hood fan came on automatically while I was cooking pasta. By the time the pasta was done, the hood fan had shut off and the microwave was dead - no lights, nothing. This was 2 days ago......

This unit is only 6 months old - does it need replacement? vent cleaning? do you have any insight?

Also have an issue of the microwave shutting down when popping popcorn!

  • cookinginca Apr 30, 2008

I have a similar issue - after cooking for about 4 mins, the microwave shuts off, totally dead like is looses power. I checked for power in the plug and it is there. After about 20 minutes, the microwave powered up and I had to set the time again.

I checked the fan that blows down on the microwave (top right side behind face plate vent and metal plate with holes in it) and this fan does turn when cooking.

I have the microwave vented outside - will this impact cooling? Should I change the venting to inside?

I just moved into an apt and whenever i tried to microwave popcorn it would pop within the popcorn setting and right at the end the microwave shuts down. The power completely goes dead.  I called the apartment management company and they came and brought the microwave to a repair shop because it was brand new.  The repair center told us the same thing that popcorn needs to be on a microwaveable dish.  the only problem is after reading this site it seems that doesnt fix the problem.  Its amazing that a company in modern times has a defaulty product and doesnt have the morals to say yes it has a problem but tries to put it back on the consumer 9 out of 10 people ive talked to say they never have to put popcorn on a plate while they pop popcorn.

I have the same problem with my over the stove mount microwave which I've only had for a couple months. After cooking for a few minutes the unit shuts down completely with no power. After the unit it cools down the unit powers back up. A friend who is an appliance repairman says it could be one of two things. Either problems with the motor cooling fan is not running to cool motor or the heat sensor is shot. In order to determine the exact problem the microwave has to be taken off mounting brackets from wall and taken apart. Probably a $20 part and minutes to change. But more of a hassle to unmount. If anyone has any info of recall by manufacturer please post.

I have a MCO160UW that I purchased in December and had installed in February. i have already had 2 display panels installed because the numbers didn't work the day I had it installed and then the clock would not keep time. Now it goes dead when i pop-pop corn. I would think that the plate inside would be a microwave safe plate. Anyway, I guess I'll call them again tomorrow to see if they can send someone in again. How much do you have to put up with before they will replace or refund your money? I guess you get what you pay for. I got a really good deal on this model and can't afford anything much more expensive. I am worried that it may short out and cause damage to the electrical or even possibly a fire.

This is a horrible model we have gone through 2 of them now I think we are out of luck. The microwave seems to come on it's self within defrost mode and get hot. Even if you unplug it and replug it in same problem.

The cooling fan is a must!

Otherwise, the magnetron will be ruined, and that drives up the repair cost.

If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:

We've tried using the microwave safe plate and it didn't work.

I've tried heating the popcorn on a microwave safe plate and it still shuts off during heating popcorn. The very first time we used the microwave, before we read in the manual that when popping popcorn a microwave safe plate is needed, the microwave didn't shut off during heating. I listened for the popcorn and stopped it myself before the time was up since I didn't use the popcorn setting. Because I'm sure we all know a popcorn setting on any microwave is useless. I don't even know why they bother. One minute and forty seconds barely gets the bag inflated.

Mine did the exact same thing...until the last time.  It shut down and won't turn back on.  What should I do????

I'll try the microwave safe plate tonight. Popcorn always kills the microwave. At least the bag is usually almost fully popped when it cuts off!

I will try out the microwave safe plate idea and see if it works. Popcorn always kills it, thankfully most bags are about done any way so it's not like only a few kernals have popped.

I have a new Magic Chef over the range microwave, actually my second, the first I returned for replacement and they both experience the same problem, it shuts down completely during popcorn popping, even the display goes dead until reset in about 10 minutes. All fans are working.

You simply need to use a microwave safe plate when cooking items. If you do not use a plate, and you place the item (popcorn, baked potato, etc) directly on the glass, then it will over-heat the microwave. The microwave has an auto thermal sensor, and will shut down before it fully over-heats. Using a microwave safe plate will solve you're problem.

You absolutely need the magnetron cooling fan to be working, or the magnetron will be destroyed!

It is part # 3511800100 and you can order it for less than $20 here.

Far less than a magnetron.

If the microwave is above the stove, the heat sensors in the microwave
may turn on fans to cool it even though the microwave itself is not
running. It tries to save its life. It should turn off when the stove is not
heating it.

I have a Magic Chef Microwave model # MC0160UB serial # DJ07201331 It acts like it's working but does not heat food/liquids. It's not very old.

There are three possibilities, the first is a bad magnetron that heats the food,"common problem" next the high voltage capacitor and diode do fail on occasion, the cost to repair may equal the amount of a new one.

My MAGIC CHEF MCO153uw stopped working. It heats

This sounds like a thermal protector is turning the microwave off. If I were to hazard a guess, it would be the magnetron (produces the microwaves) is overheating causing the shutdown. If the fan was not running it would create the same condition by causing the magnetron to overheat.

You can still use it, but must be aware that this is a relatively high power microwave, so food will burn if it isn't turned.

Microwave not heating up

Magnatron is suspect. Need to put a voltmeter on the input (primary) side to the high-voltage transformer (big heavy iron thing in there) Should be getting 120Vac when it goes to cook cycle. Don't touch the other (high voltage) side of this transformer. If the power is there, you are looking at replacing either the magnatron or the high-voltage capacitor and diode. Its affordable if you do it yourself - buy the part on EBAY - lookup "universal magnatron"

Microwave stopped working completely

Fan turned on after cooking because a thermostat got to hot and tripped turning on the fan to try to cool the unit.  The unit went completely dead when thermal fuse tripped which is located above the cavity on the left side.
