I don't see how you can get to safe mode when you have no keyboard access

  • AnnoyedSal Jan 08, 2008

I can't get the keys to work during boot to get to safe mode (is it F2 or F8?). Nothing seems to work. I am getting disk errors, so I know the hard disk is going so am wondering if drivers are corrupt. Don't think it can be a keyboard problem because neither keyboard nor mouse work nor do they work when externals are attached. So frustrating because once it is booted up all looks/works fine - just can't do anything. Also can't figure out how to take out the hard disk. I have a duplicate system and thought about swapping hard disks to see if I can get to it to pull data off. Not obvious how to pull it out once the cover is off the back.

I have the same problem, mousepad and keyboard are both lock up, even it is in Save Mode select screen, I can't use the cursor key to select safe mode, so I don't think it is Window problem. I try to hook up the external mouse using the USB port, but it has no response, then I use the memory stick plug in to it, my memory stick have no light comes on, so I though the 5V is missing but when I measure it , the 5V is there, I have took the machine apart and see any in line fuse burn out but every fuse I found seems O.K., I have no clue how to fix this now. it is a trade in and no warranty on it. Need HELP, I got this lap top only half years ago.

Took it to a local shop and they said mother board is shot. Will never buy an Acer again. No one should. Piece of crap. Thanks to all for your responses.

I have an Acer Aspire 3500 (I think it's about 5 years old max), I too will never buy anything that this rip off company makes. The keyboard and mouse fail to work. Acer has left the worst impression on me and if anyone mentioned to me that they were thinking about buying an Acer, I would tell them that it would be the worst decision they could make. My 15 year old Toshiba still works. Nice job on the craptop you made, Acer.

If I need to boot from CD, I need to "press any key to boot from CD" or if I need boot to get into safe mode, I need to press "F2", but the keyboard not even response, how can I get in there?

Since I bought the Aspire 5100 in Dec. 2006, it has crashed 4 times. When it crashes, a weird screen comes up, and everything is frozen, so you cannot do anything but power it down. When you try to power back up, most of the time it will not boot up. Rarely, it will boot up but the keyboard and mouse are locked, so again, you can't do anything. The first time it happened was March 2007, about 90 days after I bought it. I sent it in to Acer, and they replaced the motherboardkeyboard and mouse frozen - 1.gif. The same exact thing happened in June 2007 and in Oct 2007. They replaced the motherboard each time. With this trend, I knew that if it happened outside the 1-year warranty, Acer would tell me I'm on my own, so I called to complain that they never fixed the problem. They did confirm that outside the 1-year warranty, I would be on my own! (Sad way to stand behind your product and to take care of your customers!) Well, it just happened again mid-February, they told me to take a hike, and I got my attorney involved. In researching this problem, I spoke to a very experienced computer repair center who confirmed they have been getting in these models with the same exact problem. He confirmed that something is causing the connections for the keyboard, the mouse, and the USB ports to blow on the motherboard, which is why Acer kept replacing the motherboards on my unit until I was out of warranty. And to compound the problem, even if I wanted to have it repaired, it seems the motherboards can't be gotten. He also pointed me to posts from Italy, from Ontario Canada, and from several other states in the U.S. with users with this Acer model outlining the exact same scenario. So, I'm stuck with a computer that doesn't work and that cannot be fixed! What Acer should have done was a recall to fix their obvious design flaw OR to make it right with customers who paid good money for a reliable laptop4.gif and instead got in essence a defective product. But that would cost Acer too much money, so I guess they figure they'll field complaints until people get tired and give up. I'm working on a legal alternative. Contact me at ejulaw@hotmail.com if you'd like to explore options. My name is Ed, and the ejulaw stands for Equal Justice Under Law, which Acer counts on us not exercising.

The solution is never buy an Acer & especially never buy anything from Tiger Direct.
We unfortunately bought two Acer laptops at about the same time...disaster...lemons!
To top it off, when I finally sent one of them back for them repair issues that I'd had with mine from the beginning, they fixed only about half of the problems, some barely/poorly (e.g. loud, barely working DVDrw drive (whatever you call that thing) THEN apparently they dropped it (looks like onto a concrete floor), cracking/smashing the top and the bottom, ruining my SD slot, USB port...I haven't checked the ethernet port on that corner...THEN just put it in the box and sent it back to me without a word (box was perfect and totally undamaged/not crushed)
To this day the on/off button barely works, and sometimes does not (issue from initial purchase, right out of the box, along with other problems.)
My son's laptop has had issues. Week or so ago wouldn't come on at all. When it finally did come on, booting up to the desktop, keyboard, mouse, touchpad, etc. do not work.
Junk!
I'd love to hear from you if you have any solutions to fix these inexpensively, and/or if you have found legal recourse.
Thanks
Alicia

My keyboard is frozen

When any Panasonic Toughbook is frozen,
you can try the following:

1) Plug-in an external USB Keyboard and see
if that works. If it does, then at least you can continue
to work in a round-about way.

2) Go to Programs, Accessories and Ease of Access.
Choose On Screen Keyboard. You can now type with
a keyboard which is display on the screen.
Better than nothing.

3) Shut Down the Toughbook Properly or if the unit
is really frozen Hold Down the Power Button for
10-15 seconds until the unit powers off. This is a
last resort way of regaining control of your Toughbook.

A replacement keyboard may be your final option.

Good Luck.

Built in mouse has not worked properly from day 1. Now my external mouse won't work either. I tried a different external moue, but it doesn't work either.

Unplug everything except the power cord, including the following:

Speakers
Printers
Scanners
USB devices
Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)
USB flash drive or other external storage devices
External Monitor
External Keyboard
External Mouse
If your computer is attached to a docking station, undock it.

Make sure the touchpad or your finger has no dirt, grease, liquids or food on it (the touchpad has to make a good contact with your finger to work correctly).

Turn the computer back on and retest the touchpad.

When the touchpad still does not work correctly proceed to step 5.

When the touchpad does work correctly, attach one external device at a time and test the touchpad to see which one may have caused the issue.

Make sure the latest driver for the touchpad is installed (you may need to use a external USB or Bluetooth mouse), for more information refer to:

Keyboard is frozen, mouse works but keyboard seems dead

Try an external USB keyboard or use the on-screen key board which is a feature of Windows - the mouse has to be working for the On-Screen keyboard to work. If any of these two remedies work, your Keyboard is bad.

Compaq notebook laptop: my mouse pointer or arrow is

If you have a manual for the notebook, check to see if you can use the function key and the similarly coloured key on the keyboard which enables/disables the touch pad. Usually you can disable the mouse pointer touch pad with this FUNCTION key + MOUSE key when pressed together. Often these keys have the same colour (usually blue). The purpose is to disable the touch pad when you are using an external USB or wireless mouse, then you press the 2 keys again together to enable the touch pad once you have removed the USB/wireless mouse.

If that doesn't work, borrow a USB mouse and attach it to your notebook to use temporarily while you diagnose the problem.

Did you figure out your KVM?

if you tried to connect your mouse to the keyboard port and still it doesn't work. Power cycle meaning unplug the KVM from the CPU, monitor, keyboard and mouse. Then wait for about 30seconds before reconnecting again. If you still encounter the same problem that the keyboard port won't work then it means that keyboard port is defective. Replace it.

Acer monitor frozen & curser will not move.

If your mouse will not move, it is a problem with the computer, Make sure you're plugging it into the correct port. If it's a ps2 mouse don't plug it into the keyboard port by mistake.

Does the keyboard work? If you press the windows key does the start menu come up?

If the keyboard works, try using a USB mouse. If the keyboard does not work, try plugging the keyboard in where the mouse is and the mouse in where the keyboard is.
