Question about Nikon COOLPIX L4 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Lens error My coolpix L4 was working perfect. Then, I went to turn it on and it said "Lens Error" on the screen. None of the buttons will function and the lens is frozen out. When I turn it off, the screen goes black and the lens remains in the out position. I tried replacing the batteries and cleaning the lens with a soft cloth, but it didn't help. Can you tell me how to fix it? Thank you!

I have the same problem but i know that the camera was dropped by my daughter who then tried to turn the lens around to try and fix it-slightly despairing on this one.

i bought my nikon coolpix l4 for my birthday last year. when i first tried to transfer pictures on to the camera using the ok button the screen would say transferring but then stop saying there was an error, so i would always just go to my computer and access them that way. my mom just bought a nikon p5000 and when she used the ok button to transfer her pictures it worked. so i decided to try using it again and while the coolpix l4 was connected to the computer it beeped and shut off, sometimes it does this when the battery dies while its connected and the lens gets frozen out for about 5 minutes but will then go in, unfortunatley my lens is frozne out now and ive tried replacing batteries but i dont know what else to do.

Problem is the same. Occured when I switched batteries which were non lithium. I think the batteries are undercharged. Will try to charge them and reinstall.

My digital camera has a lens error

Try one of these two fixes, if they dont work for you follow the link below for further troubleshooting.

http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

Fix #1: Remove the batteries from the camera, wait a few minutes. Put a fresh set of batteries back in (preferably rechargeable NiMH 2500mah or better) and turn the camera on. If that didn't work, try pressing and holding the Function or OK button while turning the camera on.
Fix #2: If the camera's batteries ran down completely while the its lens was still open, the camera may show a lens error or not start properly when new batteries are installed. Remove the memory card and keep it removed, then install the new batteries. When you turn the camera on with the card removed it may come back to life, as this triggers a reset in some cameras. Error E30 (for older Canon's) means that you don't have a memory card installed, so turn it off, slip in the SD card and turn it on one last time

The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:

Lens error is displayed on nikon coolpix L 4. what do I do?

Here are a few possible fixes :

Fix #3: Insert the cameras Audio/Video (AV) cable, and turn the camera on. Inserting this cable ensures that the camera's LCD screen remains off during the start process. Thus extra battery power is available to the camera's lens motor during startup. This extra power can be useful in overcoming grit or sand particals that may be jamming the lens. If the AV cable doesn't fix the lens error by itself, consider keeping this cable installed while trying fixes 4, 5, and 7 as a means to provide extra power to help to these fixes. But note that I DON'T recommend keeping the cable installed during Fix 6 as you may damage the AV port while tapping the camera. Reinsert the cable only AFTER tapping the camera.

Fix #4: Place the camera flat on its back on a table, pointed at the ceiling. Press and hold the shutter button down, and at the same time press the power-on button. The idea is that the camera will try to autofocus while the lens is extending, hopefully seating the lens barrel guide pins back into their slots.

Fix #5: Blow compressed air in the gaps around the lens barrels with the idea of blowing out any sand or grit that may be in there jamming the lens. Other variations include blowing with a hair dryer in “no heat” setting, or sucking the gaps with a vacuum (careful with this one). Some people also have actually used a "Shop Vac" with this fix to help extend a retracted lens.

try these:-
  • connect it to pc and on it
  • vaccum the barrel of lens
  • changing mem. card and batt. for 2min.
  • shake it.
  • on and off in different positions
  • hit the part near lens softly with palm (trust me this made mine work)

Hope you purchased an extended warranty. I've had two Cannon's with the dreaded lens error. Probably what happened was that while it was in your purse, somehow the power button got pressed. The camera powered up, tried to extend the lens, then stripped the gears or broke whatever mechanism extends the lens. The sad part is that if it's not under warranty, it probably not worth dumping $100.00 + into fixing it. Too bad, it's a nice 8mp camera with some pretty good reviews. I feel your pain.

Reading lens error on nikoncoolpix l12

Hitting camera on desk once has partial fix.
When camera's batteries taken out & then put back in and the power on button pressed to switch camera on, the lens extends out & the camera now works.
BUT when the power button pressed to switch camera off the lens retracts AND a "Lens Error" msg appears on the LCD screen.
Just have to take batteries out to remove msg & start again as above but WITHOUT hitting the camera.
Thanks
