I was having the same problem as the rest after hooking my RCA S2001 MP3 player up to my new computer that is running Windows Vista Home. I did the following to fix my MP3 player on my old computer which is XP Home.
I fixed my player by loading the latest firmware version (1.5 at this time and can be found at http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/product.aspx?product=124&post=6 ). After you load this application to your computer you access the update device application from the start menu/programs/RCA digital Audio Player/Jet/Update device. One thing that I had to do that had not been mentioned yet in this forum was selecting "Format data area"
flash errror - f2ba14f.jpg
Doing this wipes your device completely clean but it allows for you to keep using the device. The update device program will give you additional information after the update and format.
This should fix your device if not contact RCA through the same website above to ask additional questions.

I finally got mine to work. I let it go completely dead. Then I plugged it in to my laptop, clicked computer, right clicked the Jet and clicked format. I lost everything on it but it seems to be working fine now.

My husband's RCA Jet s2001a was working fine and then he had the same problem.  We tried resetting and reformatting and nothing.  Still had the same message when unplugged from computer.  I downloaded the latest version of firmware 1.5V from RCA website.  I plugged in the mp3 player, pushed the reset button.  Then while holding down the play button for the whole process, I formatted the mp3 player then updated the firmware on the mp3 player.  When I unplugged the player, the error message was gone and player seems to be back to normal.  If the above process does not work, then try uninstalling RCA firmware previously used and repeat the above process.  Hope this helps someone else.

My jet, when i sync music into it. it says flash error! please back up the data and format the player

You have to plug the mp3 player into your pc and then click on format. The data inside may be corrupted and that is the reason why you are receiving the error. After the format, you can load music again and enjoy listening to your songs.

An error on my rca mp3 jet says fat error

Not really sure of the options there but here is a fix that works on rca H106

Go to settings and go to advanced press play once only. Plug into computer and it wil recognize it as a flash drive. Completely Format the drive then unplug the player from computer. It will switch back to previous setting automatically. If you need to update drivers and firmware use the auto updater from http://www.voxxsupport.com/images/downloads/autoupdater.exe

See other solutions posted here about downloading new firmware. Included is holding down the play button when you turn it on and connect it. Click the box to reformat the disc and install ver 1.5 or later of firmware. It wipes the drive but it works. Good luck!

My MP# player says "Flash Error"

If you have no way of using a windows computer for this, if you're using an I-mac which you can use bootcamp on then install a free OS like Ubuntu and format it that way as it is Linux based and you can use windows utilities on it.
