Question about Dell Latitude C800 Notebook

Hitachi drive needs password on laptop but not desktop?

A friend of mine gave me a Hitachi 2.5'' hard drive (DK23CA-20) when he replaced the hard drive on his Compaq laptop. I tried putting it in my old Latitude CPi-R laptop, but it asked me for a password. My friend doesn't remember setting a password on it, and it seems to work fine on his without asking for one. Even more strangely, I plugged it into my desktop and it worked fine without asking for a password (although I didn't use it as the boot drive). I then ran a program called ATA Password Tool that I found at, and that couldn't find a password either (I tried clearing it anyway, just in case). However, when I put it back in the Latitude it still asks for a password. Is there something wrong with my Latitude? Has anyone else seen this? i bought this laptop from the company that i work for and it has a password on it i dont know and neither does the company because they went out of business...anyway i can reformat it?

I was given a IBM think pad 2626.My friend can't remember the password. What can I do?

There are three passwords used at a typical customer site:
the Setup password, the HDD password, and the Power
On password.
Ÿ Power On password:
1. Power off the computer.
20 ThinkPad 390E 2. Remove the battery pack and AC Adapter.
3. Remove the backup battery (RTC) for 20
minutes or use a screwdriver to touch the
backup battery (RTC) for 1 second.
4. Put back the backup battery (RTC).
5. Power on the computer and wait until POST
6. Verify that the password prompt does not
Ÿ Supervisor and HDD passwords:
The Supervisor password and Hard Disk password
(Hard Disk1 and Hard Disk2) are security features
that are used to protect the system and the hard disk
drive data from unauthorized access. No overriding
capability is provided, so it cannot be replaced if they
are forgotten. If the customer forgets the Supervisor
password, the system board must be replaced. If the
customer forgets the Hard Disk password, the hard
disk drive must be replaced.

I set a password for my Hitachi hard drive and can't remember it!

There are too approaches to fix this, reload the operational system from scratch, remember to set the boot order to start the cd/dvd driver first. If that is not a option go to and and type hard drive password.

Can you use a hard drive from a desktop as an external hard drive for a laptop

You can yes, but you will need to buy an external enclosure so that you can hook it up via a USB cable, and the go into the laptops Bios and make sure that you have the option to boot from an external device. It might be a lot easier and cost effective to just buy a new or even used laptop drive. Especially since that drive you have is only 20GB.

Need to recover files from totally dead PC

You can remove the desktop hard drive and install it into an external USB drive enclosure ($12 ~ $20 Best Buy, Fry's, OfficeMax/Depot).

You will now have an external USB drive that you can plug into your laptop. It will appear as Drive E:, most likely.

I have the following hard drive HITACHI HTS541040G9SA00 40G sata 5400rpm which is defunct and I want to replace it with a compatible upgrade of 80G? The hard drive is from a Toshiba Equim M70-337 Please...

It's just a 2.5 SATA drive so any drive will more than likely do.....don't lock yourselft ito 80GB when there are 320, 500, etc out there. What is most important is the largest drive your system BIOS will recognize....which most ROMs can be flashed for compatability with newer larger drives.

Check with your Laptop Manufacturer Support Site to see the largest drive supported by your BIOS and if there are any updates.

If you have your hear set on the 80GB Hitachi take a look at the Spec sheet (more like a book)from Hitachi at the link below which provides specs on the 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100GB drives:$file/5K100_SATA_sp1.2.pdf

Replacing a hard drive in a Laptop is probably easier than replacing a light bulb, IMO.

Acer 5315 recon harddisc security password required

Bad news, someone has set the hard drive security option. The hard drive is hardware locked and can't be unlocked without the password. Not even putting the hard drive in another machine will bypass the security. You can send the drive to hitachi repair in Dallas, Tx. for recovery but it is very pricey.

BIOS and HDD Password

Go here to reset BIOS:

Good luck with the hard drive...haven't found anything that actually works. There are several places that can unlock it (so they say) for a fee, and you gotta ship it to them.

Never heard of a 'hard drive code' before.. You don't mean a BIOS password, do you?? If it is a bios password, there is most likely a switch or 'jumper pin' on the motherboard, that will reset the bios to default. That will get rid of the password. If this is not helpful, please describe what happens when you try to start the pc..? Maybe more info will help sort this out. Go to the website of the manufacturer & look for your model of pc. It will tell you how to reset the bios password, if you need further info..
