if your using the motorola k1 if you look at the keypad number 2 has ABC under it as if you wanted to use A press the button once for B press it twice and C three times and so on if you look at the numbers they all have letters under the number its just pressing numbers to get the letter up but if you use a pc or laptop much you would be better with a phone with a qwerty keypad!
It sounds like you might need a new keypad. Keypads can get damaged or worn out. They can also be replaced. I have never done it to my K1 but I have replaced a lot of Motorola V3 keypads. It is more affordable than buying a new phone but you will be without your cell phone while it is being repaired. Sorry, I forget that I have always repaired my own and so I don't know how much a shop would charge you to replace it.
If the phone still works, check to see if the left side of the hinge (when the phone is open and facing you) is loose. If you can wiggle the top 1/2 of the phone, the hinge is damaged, therefore damaging the flex cable that runs through it. If that is the case, replace the hinge assembly and the flex and you're good.
