I can start the pc from cold and it starts up and the cpu fan runs for a few secomds then shuts down. It's as if the power to the fan plug is being cut. I have run this pc without any problems for 2 years. I'm wondering if the motherboard is at fault as the power supply unit and the cpu fan check out.

Replace it and let us know if it still happens with the new one.It shut down because of overheating, I hope it didnt mess up your CPU.

The motherboard could have bad caps. Check each one and see if any are bulged on top or leaking.

It very well could be the CPU and/or the motherboard.. You said that the cpu fan was not running. It could of overheated the CPU.

The fan not running would of most likely caused by the bad board. When you get a chance, pull the CPU and see if it is burned. It may have a burn mark right in the middle of the chip.

Dell VOSTRO 460 beeps during startup and will not startup.

many times if the fan over the cpu chip on the motherboard fails to run or blow, an beeping alarm will begin and PC will not start. the cpu has to be kept cool so if fan fails the startup is stopped. have found lose wire connections from fan to motherboard terminal, or power supply may be blown, try checking those first. if nothing lose then wiggle those wires to see if the fan starts.

When I plug the unit into power, the CPU fan runs very fast but no boot, and then when I press power on the fan slows down and the PC boots normally. It shuts down in about 30 minutes with no sign of...

Sounds like you are overheating. One way to tell if it's overheating is you say it will run for about 30 minutes then shuts down. When it shuts down try rebooting to see if the boots successfully. If it fails to boot successfully right after it shut down then you are probably overheating. If you wait awhile to let it cool down for 30 minutes or so and if you reboot and it does it successfully you definitely have a overheating problem. If I remember correctly all those compaq sr series have loud and fast running fans. Computers overheat because of three reasons for the most part: 1) A fan has stopped working. 2) The Thermal Paste on the CPU and Heat Sink has dried up or is not thick enough to keep the unit cool. 3) Dust has clogged the fan vents and inside the computer. Fortunately for you desktops don't have to be completely disassembled like laptops to get to the fan, CPU and heatsink. Just pop the case and you'll see the components attached to the motherboard

Server starts to boot then powers off.

Check your CPU cooler. If it is not properly mounted your CPU/s could be overheating. There is a safety mechanism in Pentium chips that shut down the processor when it reaches a certain temperature. If your heat sinks are mounted correctly, check your Heat sink fans. Ball bearing fans are notorious for making a little noise then quitting.

This happens because your CPU is overheating, open your PC and blow any dust off the openings and CPU/Power supply fans, if you think one of the fans is not working... replace it.
