What kind of knob? Is it on the side or front? There is a round large rotary dial on most machines to the right which is what runs the motor. In the front of some machines you will find a knob that can adjust the length and/or width of the stitch. Or a dial in the front near the needle can adjust the tension of the presser foot that feeds the fabric through to be sewn.
