Ativa X1000 paper shredder that doesn't turn on

I have an Ativa X1000 paper shredder that doesn't operate. The shredder is plugged in, but the 'ready' light is not lit. Reverse / Auto: neither position does anything.
I looked underneath (inside the catch basket) at the safety switch area, but I see no switch or switch arm. I know shredders usually have some kind of safety feature, whereby the shredder does nothing unless the switch is engaged. The basket that collects the paper shreddings has a tab on it for engaging a switch.
Any thoughts on what to look for? (besides a new shredder---ha, ha!)
I've repaired a few shredders on my own...thought I'd ask while I look at this one.
