Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

GE Spacemaker JVM1631BB005 making noise

My microwave started making a grinding/grating noise today. The manufacturer's date is November 2001. Everything is functional, though when I go to cook something this terrible noise comes from underneath. Also, strangely, it seems as though the turntable is going counter-clockwise, which I guess I never noticed before which way the turntable moved.

I have the same problem. I think it is the synch motor

The exact same problem occurred with my GE Spacemaker microwave oven this morning (Jan. 7), model number JVM1630WB006 manufactured in Jan., 2002. Unit seems to be functioning properly, but alarming grinding noise seems to be coming from underside of unit.

    Ideas/solutions, anyone? Thanks!

Many thanks to e3enigma above! I removed the synch motor under the turntable; all other microwave functions work fine and the grinding noise is gone, hooray! A trip to the appliance parts store tomorrow for a replacement synchronous motor and all should be well. Thanks again!

GE Spacemaker XL 1800 Making a grinding noise. Can it be fixed or is it under warranty?

Under warranty or not? You would know that by your date of purchase receipt. I don't know the warranty arrangement in your country.
If it is making a harsh sound, you may have a short circuit magnetron or diode pack.
If it is just making a grinding noise, it could be the turntable motor. Without more information, I cannot tell.
Spare parts are available through a GE stockist or microwave repair shop.
Hope this helps.

Wont heat food

It could be that the "grinding" noise was actually "arcing" taking place inside the cavity or uder the cover. The magnatron is possibly damaged or the h.v. diode. Should be repaired by qualified repairman
