Either the fresh batteries are bad (this can happen), or they were inserted improperly, or the camera is defective somewhere. Measure the voltage on the batteries with a multimeter (voltmeter). Alkaline (regular) AA batteries measure about 1.6v to about 1.5v when new. NiMH (rechargeable) measure about 1.24v when fully charged. Be sure to install them with the + terminal and the - treminal going in the right direction. There should be some indication of this in the battery compartment of the camera. Hope this helps.
