Actually each original cartridge has a sensor that reports back to the printer information like ink level and others.
Once the cartridge gets empty, there is no way to reset it, even though you just refill it.

If you had it commercially refilled, they should have "reset" the computer-chip on the cartridge, to say that it is full.

If you did it yourself, you should have a small electronic tool to do the "reset".

However, some cartridges don't have such a chip, and some chips cannot be "reset". So, just use the refilled cartridge, until it gets empty.
