Re: unknown device.

What do you mean by "the hold button wouldn't go off"? Was the orange light still on? Either way, you should try restarting your iPod if you haven't done so already.

I pod shuffle of apple-unknown error 1442

This could be a solution you can try. If you do not have a virus program on your pc and you need to get one to protect your computer, download a free version at and do a scan. It updates itself free, but you may also have malware, so you may have to go to to see if there's something out there you can download for malware. You can also try microsofts version of defender. Sounds to me like a software issue. Once you are done, reboot your system and try it itunes again, your device should be automatically recognized. If not, look at your device drivers, perhaps there's something running in the background, or a device incompatibility issue. You can have your computer devices updated at for free too. Hope this helps. Rose @

Grays songs in ipod when connected to Computer

You need to set your iPod to update manually, instead of syncing automatically when you plug it into the computer.

To do this, plug your iPod into your computer, and on the iPod info screen that pops up in iTunes when your iPod is connected, click "Manually Manage Files."
You'll now have to click and drag your songs from your library to your iPod, but now you can also play songs on your computer directly from your iPod and delete songs from your library without deleting them from your iPod at the same time.

Hope this helped!

enable an option called "Include Music Videos" in my iPod settings. Apparently, this feature is disabled by default when you update to iTunes v7.
