MP-3 Player playing "dead"

Changing from music to radio, system powered down... restarted it and was stuck on the "initializing" screen for hours... battery finally died... trying to "recharge" off computer... lights are on, but no "charging" indicator on screen and computer can't read the MP3's memory...
