possibly back light failing. If you have a GOOOOD and i mean GOOOOD repair shop around, they may be able to replace just the back light it self. (ALSO) could be the inverter for the back light or a possible ribbon cable. THIS IS FIXABLE!!
all of the above require a good tech to work on the unit, but can be fixed, I have replaced MANY backlights my self.
