I posted the info below for someone else with a similar problem. I hope it is helpful.

If you can remove the memory card and put it into your
computer it will see the card. If it does not automatically give you an optoin to veiw the pics. Go to:Start>Computer>expand computer in left pane(your card will have a drive letter and it's name after it i.e.E:\canon sd card.>select your card and look in the different folders, it's usually in DCIM>101 or other ### folders.

Sep 09, 2009- can you cancel the format. open the folder with pics, then copy them into your documents or picture folder on your
hard drive? I have seen these cards do some strange things.
If you still have trouble try rebooting your computer. After restart insert card and try again.
FYI; always let your camera finish processing a picture you have taken before turning it off & never remove the card while camera is on. If
batteries
die while processing a photo you can risk losing all pics on card. So
download often and replace batteries before they die completely.
