Ouch. It might have crash, sorry about that. On that big of the drive, if it doesn't shut down right, it can ruin it very easy. When you shut down properly it parks the head, and when it doesn't the head doesn't get park, and it tryies. When that happens it will crash the drive. I would try to do some diagnostics to it and check and I hope I am wrong, but it doesn't sound good at all.

I recently reinstalled my OS (Windows XP Media center edition). Ever since i reloaded the OS my WD My Book Home edition 1TB external HDD stopped showing up in the windows explorer as a drive letter. The drive is listed under the Disk Management as "unallocated".
It was working fine before i reinstalled the OS. For example i backed up my documents from C: drive onto the external drive and i was able to access the drive and copy the files. Please note that before reinstalling the OS i didn't remove the file using the safely remove hardware option and also i didn't turn off the drive. I'm not sure if this is a partition table corruption issue.
My entire backup is in the file and it will be a great loss if i can't retrieve files from the disk. I would greatly appreciate your help in recovering the data from the disk.
