Bad eject button If you are running Microsoft Windows, open My computer, right-click the disc drive icon and choose the option to eject. If this ejects your CD-ROM drive tray, the button on the disc drive is defective, and it is recommended that the drive be replaced.
No power to computer or disc drive If you have recently installed a new optical drive or you have moved the computer, the power cable to the CD-ROM may have become loose or disconnected. Reseat the power cable to make sure this is not the problem.

CD stuck within drive If you suspect that a CD may be stuck within the drive, the tray needs to be ejected manually. Look for the small manual eject hole that ( not the head phone jack) located on the front of the drive. Unwind a paper clip and place one end of the paper clip into the hole to eject the CD-ROM tray.

If CD-ROM tray opens part of the way, pull it gently to see if you can get it to open fully. If it cannot be opened any further, it is likely that the gears within the CD-ROM drive have become damaged or dislodged. But usually, a stuck CD is blocking the way.

Caution: If you are able to open the CD-ROM drive using a paper clip, we do not recommend continuing to do so. This is meant to be used as a temporary solution; the drive should be replaced.

If the CD or DVD is not set into the disc tray correctly, it could be sticking up above the surface of the tray, causing it to get stuck with then tray tries to open. In this case, it may be possible gently shake the computer and move the CD or DVD into the correct place in the tray, allowing the drive to open. However, use caution when doing this, as you do not want to shake the computer too much, or you could damage other components.
If this is a desktop computer, you can prevent damage to the computer by opening the computer and removing the disc drive in order to shake or rotate the drive. When the drive is out of the computer, you can manually release the tray by inserting a paperclip into the manual eject hole.


In the case of a laptop computer or a slot load disc drive, since the CD or DVD does not sit in a tray, it cannot be shaken in order to adjust the disc. If the disc is visible you may be able to move the disc a bit by hand, enough to allow the drive to eject the disc. Again, be careful in doing so, as you could damage the disc or drive in the process.
If you're still unable to get the disc out of the drive after following the above steps, it may be a damaged drive and should be replaced. If the disc in the drive is an important disc and you believe the drive is bad, the drive can be disassembled in order to remove the disc. In the case of a laptop or computer with a slot load disc drive, the computer needs to be serviced in order for the drive the be replaced and the disc to be removed.

What Is It? The Disc Read error is a simple one. It simply means that the Xbox is unable to read the disc that you have placed in the drive. In the majority of instances, this error has nothing to do with the functionality of the console, but, rather, hinges on the actual disc that has been inserted into the DVD tray.
Disc-Related Errors The most common reason for Disc Read errors are related to the disc itself. Numerous conditions can keep the laser from reading the information contained within the game, DVD or CD in the DVD drive.

• The disc is scratched - Game discs, audio CDs and DVDs can become scratched very easily. Usually this is because they have not been kept in their cases, but left in the open. Simply resting two discs atop one another can scratch the bottom disc. If discs are sufficiently scratched, the data contained on them will be inaccessible to the drive.
• The disc is dirty/dusty - Dirt and dust can build up on the faces of discs left exposed. When sufficient dirt or dust has built up, it can block the laser beam used to read the disc, resulting in a Disc Read error.
• The disc is the incorrect region - DVDs come in formats called "regions." These regions match the region specified in the software of the DVD player. Some games also have these regions. If the region of the DVD and that of the player do not match, the disc will not play.

Can I Fix These Errors? Repairing disc-related issues may or may not be possible. If the cause is simply dirt and dust, you can certainly repair the disc. However, if the cause is due to extreme scratching, then replacing the disc is likely your only choice. If the disc is from the incorrect region or from another country, you will have to obtain the correct region. Returning the disc to the retailer for exchange may work.
Non-Disc Related Errors As mentioned, there can be some Disc Read errors that have nothing to do with the disc at all. In this case, it's time to troubleshoot the Xbox.

• First, simply try to reboot the machine. Often, this will flush the cache or other error and allow the game to operate or the disc to play.
• Second, try removing the hard drive and/or memory units. Once removed, reboot the console and attempt to load the disc with the hard drive and memory out of the unit. If this works, you can simply shutdown and reinstall the hard drive.
• Attempt to play the disc in another type of player. For instance, attempt to play the DVD in another DVD player or the CD in a CD player. If the disc plays in these players, you may need to clean the Xbox DVD player.
• Check to make sure that all air vents are open and are able to provide sufficient airflow. Overheating can cause Disc Read errors, as well. In addition, ensure that the power supply is unobstructed and uncovered. Much like the Xbox 360, the power supply can become quite hot and can cause errors if unventilated.
• Check for disc tray errors. Depress the eject button and watch the tray extend. If the tray partially extends and then retracts immediately, you may have a problem with the DVD drive. If your Xbox is under warranty, this can be replaced at no charge. However, if you are out of warranty, you can install a new DVD drive on your own.
• As a note, make sure that the new DVD drive comes with the same firmware as your original console, or you may experience additional error codes after the installation of the new DVD drive.

Try lying the xbox down flat and load a disc. This solves the issue in most cases.
Also try putting a normal store-bought audio CD (not a CD-R or anything) and see if the same problem happens. In case you haven't done it already, turn it off for at least a minute and back on again. You'd be surprised how often it works!

You have a bad CD drive and you will need to get it replaced.

An 'Open Tray' error with an XBox 360 is typically a sign that the CD/DVD drive itself is faulty. This will require it to be replaced, which is not as easy as just swapping them out.

The new drive must be of the same make and model of the old drive. If I recall, there are Samsung and Toshiba drives in 360's. Once you have the exact replacement drive, the CD Drive's firmware must be flashed on a PC in order to be compatible and detected by your XBox.

1 i think the xbox cleans its own lens but check the manual if not get a good lens cleaner.

Your problem is that your Xbox 360 cd drive, the ray inside it is scratched, get a cd drive cleaner and it will be fixed.

If your xbox wont read the disc, it just says open tray, there is a very simple solution i discovered. You dont need to do anything complicated or fancy, simply make sure everytime you turn your xbox off the disc is out. Turn your xbox on without a disc in, let it get to your profile screen, then put the disc in. Works every time.
