XP folder access

My PC has been hit by a Trojan Horse virus and I have spent all weekend trying to get rid of it. There are a load of files in 'c;windows/fonts' that I want to remove but I cannot find them through My Computer or WinExplorer. Anyone know how I can access these files to remove them?

Re: XP folder access

Hey astrocan. Try downloading this free utility and create an account / password. They'll give it to you free for thirty days.
Make sure you choose "DEEP SCAN" after the initial updating of definitions.

This is a very time-effective tool which will detect registry entries and .dll's which other well known AV programs miss.

Re: XP folder access

Did you try to open your search and type in fonts, or pictures, or jpg. etc. You can always go back to the system restore if you have it working, which is done from clicking on start menu, seeing accessories at the top of the file, clicking it on, and going to system tools, clicking it on and going to system restore. Find a date that the computer worked right and restore to that point. Good Luck, hose visusus are a bummer.

Is it actually your computer/software telling you this or is it just an ad on the page you opened? Sometimes these websites are set up to scare a person. Which AV software are you using? And which OS do you have on your MAC?

Use a free, online, scanner, e.g.

to do a virus-scan.

However, "best practises" state that you can NEVER be sure that you have delete 100% of any computer-virus, and that the recommended "recovery" plan is to backup your files, buy a new disk-drive (faster? larger?), install Windows from trusted media, and reload your files from the backup.

Restart your computer, and keep pressing F8, until you get the Windows "start-up" menu -- white text over a black background.
Choose "Safe Mode", and see if you can logon.

Then, try one (or more) of the anti-virus scanners listed at:

Or, follow the "best practises" recommended by Microsoft:
and backup your data files, reinstall Windows & your anti-virus software,
and reload your data files.

Looks like you have a trojan horse in your PC.

Steps To Remove It.

Step1: Disconnect the PC from the internet.
Step2: Use a different pc or laptop to download a good antivirus trial version and install it in the infected pc.
Step3: Scan all the files until you find the trojan horse(WARNING THERE WILL BE A LOT OF INFECTED FILES!)
Step4: Remove All found infections and restart your PC.
Step5: Now that the ttrojan is removed you PC should be fine. if it is not then you will need to flash your hard drive and pc. reinstall windows and start all over.

Hope this helped.

Display Property For Windows XP

I just cleaned up a similar situation this weekend. Try this. Go into the control panel and create a new user id. Log off of your current user id and use the new one you created. See if the tabs are still there. If they are the virus trashed your desktop and you should create a new one.

Before you do that try scanning for viruses with the new desktop you just created. It might be that the virus exists on your old desktop and it won't go away because it is running. Checking for viruses using the new desktop can get rid of the problem.

Cant access files

I wouldn't try to install Norton on a machine I suspected had a virus (or at all really). There is a Norton removal tool on the Symantec website that might be useful, but you still need to get rid of the Trojan. There are a lot of free online virus scanners that should do the job. If you can go online in safe mode that would be best, or you could disable everything on startup using MSConfig.
