My Windows XP system has started to run very slow within the past week. It is especially slow when rebooting, taking in excess of 15 minutes and when launching applications.

Hi, You can try the following steps. One cleaning the startup file and running a disk cleanup.The programs running in the background at the time windows starts can slow the system down.
1. click on start >Click run 2. Type msconfig 3. You would get the system properties box 4. click on the tab that says startup 5. Click on the tab that says disable all click apply and restart your computer.
Once the system is back up. Click on start>all programs>accessories>system tools>disk clean up Note: it may take some time to clean the system. Do back up important documents if any. Though you would not loose any important information form the computer.
Thanks for using fixya proton

hv a licensed and UPDATED antivirus installed (i preferavg/kaspersky, , without updation a full version antivirus is useless)..
download, install n run microsoft kb890830..http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD724AE0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en..
download n run Startup Control Panel..http://download.cnet.com/Startup-Control-Panel/3000-2094_4-10039330.html..'remove all theunnecessary startup items from here..(if u can't find what to remove,post me/us in ur comment with all the items listed in each n every tabsherein)..
remove all unnecessary software from add/remove programs..
download, install n run 'Advanced System Care Pro'..http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-SystemCare-Pro/3000-2086_4-10399324.html..
disablethe following: a) 'Automatically Restart' right click on mycomputer->properties->advanced->startup n recovery->(uncheckon the) Automatically Restart; b)'Error Reporting' right click on mycomputer->properties->advanced->error reporting->disableerror reporting->(uncheck on the) 'but notify me when critical erroroccur'..
Increase the size of Virtual Memory, Initial: 1440; Maximum: 2880

see carefully if ur hdd is making any humming/ticking noise (like 'tictic' or 'kirr kirr')..if so it is likely to be replaced....

tryto reinstall os by some other cd/dvd(media) and or cd/dvd drive.. (totake data backups u gotta connect the hdd to another pc/laptop, for suchcases a hdd-case is available in the local spare market, it'll makebehave ur hdd to act as an external removable drive)..

this canalso b a symptom of faulty/defective of RAM..pen clean/remove carbon& or oxide formed on the teeth with an eraser n resit it..[it'll bmore prominent, that if itz cause by ram or not,..if during normaloperation, a Blue Screen appears/Memory Dump]
though, sometimes itz also caused by the m/b..

always better to seek professional advice of ur system admin/vendor....

To speed up your system try the following:
Clear prefetch
Click Start > Run > Type "prefetch"
Click Edit > Select all > Press Delete

Clean boot
  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  2. The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed
  3. Click Startup tab
  4. Click Disable All
  5. Click the Services tab.
  6. Check the Hide All Microsoft Services.
  7. Click Disable All, and then click OK.
  8. When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer
Please get back for any further assistance.

a few possibilities:

1. a "dying" disk-drive that is taking much more time for each "read" and "write" operation -- like trying to ride a bicycle with a flat tire;

2. a computer-virus that is rampant on your computer.

3. some "friend" has removed some of the RAM from your computer;
when Windows has less than 256MB of RAM, it runs *MUCH* more slowly.

If you do not know how to "trouble-shoot" the above problems, then take the computer to a computer-store, where they can diagnose your computer.
