Re: My hidden files are not visible.i have tried through...

Hi, to see your hidden files in winXPsp2, go to regedit, find:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL    and there value "CheckedValue = 0"   If there is "0", change it to "1"
This kind of problem normally comes after your PC was infected by trojans, mal.,addw., etc. Even after removing (I'm using Spyware Doctor, one of the best & NOD32 antivirus) of infection some times this reg value still staying in the incorrect "0" so just change it.

Ok did you click on tool's folder options and the select view hidden or system files, If you did then please verify according to djnick989's suggestions,

Also verify that the virus is totally out, sometimes not the entire thing is removed cause new variants of the same virus come out daily, so the entire thing might not have been removed. What you can do is try another antivirus like AVG FREE or you can restore to a previous date before you had the virus, where you were able to view the files

Open Explorer, press ALT and T on the keyboard. This should pull down Tools menu, click on Folder Options. Click on VIEW tab then tick the Show Hidden Files and Folders option. That should display the hidden files for Windows 7.
Hope this helps.

Hidden files are not showing

Hi there.
It sounds like you have a virus on your machine, apart from not being able to view hidden files and folders is there anything else thats going wrong with the PC at all?
for example on start-up do you get any strange error messages or has the recycle bin name been changed?

I couldn't view the hidden files when i apply show hidden files in my folder options in tools menu in menu bar.

Folder Options is removed from Tools in Windows by a virus. The virus is called W32.Rontokbro@mm OR W32/Rontokbro.gen@MM

The removal of this virus is slightly difficult. Antivirus can't remove it automatically. However detailed procedure to remove it is available at

About this Virus/Worm:
What it does is creating new files which looked like a folder but its actually a .exe file. Unless you’ve enabled the view extensions in the folder options or else you won’t see the .exe extension of the file. The file is approximately 43.7Kb and normally people will click to open it because it looked like a folder. So after you’ve open it, the virus will run each time during startup and keep on spreading and spreading… into the harddrives.

More troubles coming up. Normally when you click “Tools” in explorer, there’s a “folder options” underneath it. Once the pc is infected with the virus, the Folder Options will be missing, which disabled you to change the options to view the extension of the files. So when you see a new folder appeared from nowhere and you clicked to open it out of curiousity, the virus spread more again. Moreover, the virus disabled the registry edit where you will see this message “Registry edit is disabled by the administrator” everytime you try to edit the registry.

So how to clean the virus then? I found some solution from the following link and have successfully cleaned it from my system.

It will help you to get rid of this virus named W32.Rontokbro@mm aka brontok.a and to get back your hidden files. Source(s):

P.S.: If this information was helpful, please rate this solution.
