That has happened to me on several HP's I have owned try replacing the cord connecting to the phone line if that does not help look where the socket is for the phone jack and with a flashlight check to see if the 4 wires are sticking up they are very small and bend easily see if they are touching if they are then use a safety pin to straighten out the wire. Also if you have a splitter thay connects it to the phone line try removing the splitter and see if it works. If you still have a problem go to www.hp.com select your printer and use auto detect and let it trouble shoot the problem for you. There is also free online help with the problem as well. And if you register it it will be under warrenty and will save you from having to pay for the repair.
