i have a combo cardbus card, when i put it in to the slot it turns the laptop off.

Sounds like either a bad card or a bent pin in the cardbus slot. Try another cardbus card, if the problem continues with the new card, then try to see if one of the pins has bent in the laptop - if it shorts out against another pin, I can imagine that causing a short that could shut down the laptop.
