When scanning with an HP Photosmart C8180 dark

When scanning with an HP Photosmart C8180 dark bars appear on the output, both when I make a copy and when I scan to the computer. What component in the c8180 would be the likely cause of this, the light bar? I talked to HP support, but after a semi-full reset didn't work, they suggested I take it in for service.
