Question about Olympus Camedia C-2040 Zoom Digital Camera

Flash I bought an Olympus Camedia C2040zoom camera second hand - it is a super camera with good quality pictures however the flash is built in and sometimes when taking photographs indoors light from windows cancels the auto flash - how do I ensure the flash operates in such conditions to ensure the subjects inside are seen in the finished photo? Just push the flash mode button a few times, stopping on the lightning bolt (constant flash mode). I use this all the time on the same exact camera for backlit subjects.

Out of focus on any zoom, poor quality unless flash is used.

Try this...place the camera on a hard surface or a tripod....snap a few pics at various zoom levels. Are the pictures better? If so, the problem is you....you're moving the camera without realizing it but when you use the flash, it freezes the picture because of it's extremely fast speed.

Flash vs No Flash

Probably what's happening is that the shutter speed is automatically adjusted to a faster speed with flash. With no flash the shutter speed slows down to compensate for the lack of light, therefore leaving it open longer. So while you are holding the camera during a longer exposure you are promoting camera shake, thus blurry pictures. The LED may tell you information you need to know like shutter speed, apture, flash on/off, etc.

Olympus C2000 picture quality

There are so many variables that effect your exposure. Batteries, ISO rating, shutter, aperture, etc. Remember your pictures are digital, and you should have a good graphics program to make adjustments (e.g. Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop, Photo Deluxe, etc.). I suspect your pictures are under- exposed due to weak batteries from using the flash so much. The only batteries suitable are NiMHs. NiCad or Alkalines will not cut it.

Information about a picture's settings

I use Thumber to do it. It tells me everything I want to know - shutter > speed, F stop, ISO, zoom position, date and time down to the second, > plus some other things I don't remember. Thumber was freeware when > I downloaded it.

Settings that must be set before... the external flash feature

Yes, set the camera mode dial to P, A/S/M or any shooting mode except the movie mode. Turn on the extension flash unit's power then select the camera's flash mode. The flash mode button on the camera controls the built-in flash as well as the extension flash. Only the built-in flash and the Olympus FL-20/FL-40/FL-50 extension flash can use the red-eye reduction flash mode. All flash units can use the fill flash, flash off, and slow-sync flash modes.
