Re: electrolux epic keeps shutting down - ? symbol is on
The "?" sign is usually indicating that there is no bag in the machine. On the Canadian models, there is a switch that the cardboard of the bag pushes on when the lid is closed. If this switch is not depressed, then the machine will not run. Again, on the Canadian models, there is a clear plastic "pin" extending out the bottom right corner of the bag compartment and is pressed in when the bag is installed and the lid closed. You should be able to press this in and start the machine with the main switch, just to test it.

For Electrolux; Central Vacuum Attachment Kits and Hose and Tool Kits for Electrolux Attachment ... With a clean bag in, the unit starts up and immediately shuts off. If you hold ... From what I have read hear, it sounds like the motor is going. ... How can I fixmy electrolux epic 6500 SR vacuum? ..... It keeps cutting off and on.
check your bag for fullness, if full, change it.
if not, try adjusting your grit control on the top of the canister to the largest setting.
if your vac still shuts off, you need to replace the control valve assembly.
the dials refer to types of dirt. The higher the dial the heavier the dirt. This is for the auto shut off when the bag is full. The best setting is in the middle. If you are vacuuming up fine dust suck in some Kleenex before this will coat the bag and prevent premature shu toff.
the dial sets the type of dirt you are vacuuming.Fine dust allow bag to fill before shutting down. The best is to turn it to the middle, this should allow bag to fill properly before shutting down...Chris
This is most probably due to a worn out or clogged Control Valve Assembly.
Detach the hose and see if it runs. If it does, place hand over hole. If it shuts off, CVA is probably the cause. A clogged CVA is generally due to using generic/made-to-fit bags. Genuine bags have "Home Solutions" printed on them.
You can try turning the dial all the way to the large dot, then try to run the vacuum.
If it is the CVA, you'll need to take it to an authorized Aerus Electrolux store and have their service tech repair or replace the part. I recommend a service and clean of the vacuum at the same time. This will extend the life of the vacuum.
This vac is prone to a control valve failure with the exact symptoms you describe. There is a dial valve on top of the machine designed to regulate how full the bag will get. The valve which sits underneath the dial on the vac likely has a broken plunger and will need to be replaced. Take it to an AERUS Electrolux dealer / shop for an experienced tech to work on.
The problem was a sticking switch that was not being reset. The vacuum on/off switch mechanism is comprised of two switches. One is the main switch that turns the vacuum on and off. The second is a shut off switch that gets tripped when the full bag sensor is engaged. This second switch is supposed to get reset when you push the on/off switch on the outside of the machine. The full bag shutoff switch was stiff and it, therefore, was taking a couple of presses of the on/off switch to move the shutoff switch back into the running position.
